Celebrating the 120th anniversary of Galt FC's 1904 Olympic Gold Medal
Galt Football Cub was founded c. 1881, functioning as an amateur football club in Galt, Ontario. Drawing on the rich pedigree of talent developed locally - especially through the Galt Collegiate Institute - and in the UK, Galt FC became a force on the Ontario and Canadian football scene.
As part of the Western Football Association, Galt FC had won their first Championship in 1886, repeating as champions in 1887. Titles were added in 1893, 1901, 1902 and 1903 to their mantles, growing into a giants on the pitch and gaining a reputation as The Porridge Eating Galt Invincibles along the way.
In 1903, they made their mark on the Canadian scene by touring Manitoba, playing 17 games in 25 days. They finished the tour undefeated, winning 16 games and drawing one.
In 1904 they ventured to St. Louis, Missouri, for the third Olympiad - and first for football as an official sport at the Olympics. Galt won their first match against Christian Brothers College 7-0. They followed this with another resounding victory over St. Rose, winning 4-0. They returned home as Olympic Gold Medalists with 2500 people at the Galt Train Station ready to celebrate their heroes and champions.
In 1905, Galt FC were declared national champions after defeating Montreal Westmount over two legs, winning 2-1 in Montreal and again in Galt. They also played an English touring team, The Pilgrims at Dickson Park in September 1905. The 3500 people in attendance watched a gripping match that ended 3-3 and showed that Galt were equal to some of the best talents from the UK.
It isn't the Olympic Gold Medal that cements their legacy. Or the undefeated Manitoba Tour. Even the dominion championship or the draw against the British exhibition team at Dickson Park in 1905 don't achieve that. It's the crest on our shirts, the community that we play for, and their spirit that still kicks on at Dickson Park.
This is our history, our community, our Club.
Welcome to Galt FC.
Howard Hall, grandson of Alexander Hall who scored a hat trick for Galt FC in the 1904 Olympics, being met by Galt FC Owner and Head Coach, Mark Anderton. Sharing histories, chatting football, and ensuring Howard's own grandson has a piece of their family history to wear.
Since 2019 Galt FC has been resurrected as a grassroots soccer program, designed to be fun, affordable for families and woven into the fabric of our community.
As we continue to grow and thrive, so too does our ability to develop the technical abilities of our players with engaged coaching and gameplay that also focuses on the character and togetherness of the kids.
